Rumors of Tracking Users Using AI, Zepeto Developer Refutes

Teknologi.id - Zepeto is an app that lets you create a character out of your real picture. You can then make an emoji of your character and use it in chatrooms. Developed by Snow Corporation, the app is available to download from both App Store as well as Google Play Store. It’s a reasonably popular app, with major user base in Asia, but has been gaining momentum in the US as well. However lately, several users have deleted the app, saying it tracks or records users. One potential theory floating around is about static sounds from device’s speaker while using Zepeto, leading to speculation the app is recording users.

The rumors was picked up by major publications like Newsweek and Motherboard. Before the rumors reaching widespread media mileage, Snow Corporation, the developer of Zepeto, has now released an official statement on the matter. The company has not only categorically refuted the tracking/recording rumors, but has also tried to clear the air on how app works. Here’s what the company says:
We confirm that no tracking, or any tracking activity, of any person or object is taking place on the Zepeto app. We only use the microphone when users record videos using the in-app camera to capture the screen in video
So there you go. While it’s already been highlighted several times that the Zepeto app doesn’t ask for any location access, the statement from the Snow Corp should now be enough to finally lay the rumors to rest. (DWK)
